Fifteen years ago, healthcare stood at an inflection point. Electronic medical records (EMRs) were gaining traction; interoperability had become a rallying cry; and policymakers, providers and technology companies shared a belief: If we could digitize healthcare information and move it more efficiently between systems, better care would follow.
Much of that vision became reality. Electronic records are now nearly universal. Data moves more freely, and healthcare generates more information than anyone imagined possible. Yet one lesson has become impossible to ignore: More data has not automatically produced better decisions, better care or better outcomes.
